Will muriatic acid stain concrete. Mixing ammonia with bleach creates a lethal gas similar to mustard gas. In these products the muriatic acid is mixed with a stain color. You should see a gray stain. Then mix 3 or 4 parts water with 1 part muriatic or hydrochloric acid in a plastic bucket.

It is excellent for cleaning away rust stains and efflorescence but must be used with extreme caution. Muriatic acid is the strongest acid available to the public. You should see a chemical reaction as soon as you apply the muriatic acid. Brush or spray on a 1 10 diluted mix of acid in water onto the surface.

Muriatic acid is commonly recommended to clean and remove rust stains from concrete. Have tried everything including scrubbing the hell out of it. Acid etching is the process of applying hydrochloric muriatic or buffered phosphoric acid to a slab then rinsing it off with water. For many years it was a standard method of concrete preparation used by nearly all industrial commercial and institutional floor coating installers depending on the floor size and system to be installed.

The muriatic acid etches the concrete allowing the color to seep into the concrete. Despite its effectiveness muriatic acid should be used on concrete stains only if you ve tried gentler alternatives to no avail. When you acid etch concrete wear long sleeves gloves eye protection and a face mask to protect yourself from stray acid. Use a garden sprayer or paint brush to apply the solution to the stain.

The solution begins to bubble and it lifts and removes the stain. Washing brick concrete or stone with muriatic acid can neutralize alkalinity allowing paint finishes to last for years. Safer alternatives include trisodium phosphate which still poses risks but is not as strong as muriatic acid and sandblasting which is a manual rather than chemical process. Scrub the gray stain with a solution of 1 cup liquid chlorine bleach 1 cup powdered laundry detergent and 1 gallon of very hot water.

Leave it in place for 20 minutes. Make sure the detergent you use is ammonia free. Use a garden hose and sprayer to rinse away the acid once the stain is gone.
